The Skopje Old Bazaar is not only a symbol of purely Islamic and oriental inheritance of Macedonia. On the contrary, its visitors will have the possibility, while exploring the monuments of old Skopje, to also get acquainted to the elements of Orthodox culture which, together with the remaining elements compose the mosaic of religious and cultural plurality that characterize Macedonia. The St. Demetrius Church (Sveti Velikomacenik Dimitrij) is a typical example of the century long coexistence of two different religions in Skopje- Orthodoxy and Islam. You will feel the harmony of this coexistence at lunch time: at 12:00 o’clock, the Church tows twelve belts, while the ezan (the call for prayers) invites Muslim believers to their lunchtime prayer. The crystal clear sounds and voices of these two temples cut across each other in the air above Skopje bazaar and they echo perfectly into the fortress of Kale.This church is situated very near to the Stone Bridge, southwards of the entrance to the Old bazaar, and almost beneath the Skopje Kale, and you will find it very easily if you walk across the Stone Bridge in the direction of the Old bazaar. This religious facility has a special place in the history of the Macedonian Orthodox Church because until the construction of the Central temple in Skopje, it was this Church that served as the central temple of the Orthodox community in Macedonia.
