The monument of Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeg is the most magnificent monument of culture placed in the Old Bazaar in the modern history of Skopje. It is impossible not to capture the statue of this great Albanian warrior standing above the main artery connecting the East, the West, the North and the South of Skopje. Raising his right hand up, he reminds of a man calmly sharing wisdom and peace among people as he greets the passengers and visitors of the capital of Macedonia.Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeg is a national Albanian hero who led the wars against the Ottoman Empire in the XIV century and is famous as a great strategist, a courageous and resolved freedom fighter. Produced by the Albanian sculptor Thoma Thomai Dhamo, Skenderbeg reached Skopje during the marking of the Albanian national flag on 28 November 2006, an event organized under the auspices of the municipality of Cair.The statue is made of bronze and with its height above 4 meters, it represents the tallest historical monument in Macedonia.Skenderbeg is a symbol of the spiritual ties of the ethnic Albanians who live in Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania: the statues of this great historical personality are also placed in the capital of Albania- Tirana, and in the capital of Kosovo- Prishtina. Today, Skenderbeg is considered to be a great leader and warfare strategist who defended and promoted the values of medieval Europe in the Balkans torn by wars and occupations.
