It is considered as one of the most beautiful and most famous monuments of culture in Skopje and it represents a monumental object of the profane Islamic architecture. It was built in the middle of the XVI century; however the precise date when it emerged remains unknown. It is believed that the name “Kurshumli” dates back from the XIX century because the leaded roof which covers it, since the word “kurshum” means bullet. The ends of Kurshumli an have remained unchanged for centuries and they remain the same to date. Its position only changed after the Museum of Macedonia was built nearby Kurshumli an, and one of path walks leading towards this complex was closed. One part of the an served to accommodate the tradesmen and their merchandise, while the other part served as a barn and it included rooms for the servants. The main entrance of Kurshumli an is on the side of the bazaar, and you can reach it if you take a pedestrian walk through the gold street in the direction of the Albanian Drama Theater. The interior of Kurshumli an is truly stunning. Across the thick walls prevails an indulging silence while the construction combined with the hollowed space inside the building create echoing effects. The complex will surely make you feel as if you were part of a medieval story with living kings, palaces and chambers. You will not remain indifferent towards the window arches which give this building a special charm and overwhelming feeling.
