The old part of Skopje has many mosques, which speaks of the rich and organized spiritual life of the Muslim community during the Ottoman Empire. Not all mosques have been preserved, many of them were damaged in time and a number of them was destroyed during the 1963 earthquake. However, those which were restored and continue to foster the tradition of the Muslim believers, represent truly impressive monuments of the ottoman culture in Skopje. If you want to enter the mosques, you should bear in mind a few general tips: Muslim believers, in sign of respect for the sacred temple, take off their shoes when entering the mosque and this rule must be respected. Females must cover their head to show respect for the Muslim tradition according to which the woman wears cover. Generally, try to stay quiet and do not speak loudly.
